They Gathered at the River

Published on the occasion of the Calgary Centennial and the Golden Julilee of the United Church of Canada the book They Gathered at the River is available on the Internet at Canada's Local Histories Online.

History of Central United

Central United Church has always been a mission church, reaching out into the community. Between 1905 and 1910 it mothered seven new churches.

In 1910 Mount Royal College was built as a Christian college, under the leadership of Central's minister, Dr. George Kerby.

In 1962 The Pastoral Institute, a counselling service, was started at Central under the guidance the Rev. Ed Mullen. It outgrew the church and is now known as Calgary Counselling Centre.

During the 1960’s Knox and Central established the Church in Society to help the wanderers of those days who were referred to as “street people”.

In the mid 1980’s Central was instrumental in networking several downtown churches and service agencies to form the Calgary Urban Project Society. CUPS was established to provide effective front-line care and long-term solutions for the socially “marginalized” people of the inner city. In April of 1988, it opened its doors in a building that Central purchased for its use. With the growth of its mission to more than 20,000 cases per year, it has relocated to a larger facility.

Inn From The Cold, a project which works with local churches to provide overnight accommodation for the homeless, was expanded under Central’s leadership and currently has more than 50 congregations involved with its ministry. The Inn’s offices operated out of Central’s mission outreach building for a number of years.

Central has pioneered one of the largest and surely most innovative Addiction/Recovery ministries in the country. It provides counseling, meetings, and its own weekly “Life Recovery” worship service.

Central is partnering with Woods Homes EXIT Community Youth Outreach Program. Wood’s Homes EXIT program is dedicated to the safety, health and well-being of youth in need of comfort, guidance and support. EXIT’s mandate is to reach youth at risk on Calgary city streets to help them move on productively in life. Woods Home’s EXIT program has found a permanent home in our building at 117–7 Ave. SW. This historic building has been made ready for its task by a co-operative venture between Central and Wood’s Homes. A unique partnership of community service: Central and Wood’s Homes share a history of almost a century of commitment and service to the citizens of Calgary.
